What is Shot Peening

Shot peening is a cold-working procedure used primarily to increase fatigue life and prevent stress, corrosion, and cracking of metal parts.
During the process of shot peening, the surface of the metal part is bombarded with round steel shot. After the surface has been peened by an abundance of impacts, the surface layer is sufficiently compressed and highly resistant to the formation of stress cracks. This in turn significantly increases the useful life of the part.
Shot peening is beneficial in that it eliminates present design failures and even permits weight reduction for new designs. All Shot peening is perfomed under controlled conditions within custom built machines.
